Every year we have wildfires in our country and beyond. Climate change plays its role with the intensification of such phenomena that are taking on a new dimension (megafire) in our lives and in our daily lives. The south of Europe is most affected and for this reason it must be organized in the long run and in the long run for an unequal battle with the flames and their effects.

Wildfires have been and will continue to be even more intense and impactful in the future.

But let's see why we have fires. I have read recently and in the past that fires are due to arson, negligence, unknown reasons, PPC cables, natural causes and a host of other simplistic reasons, and we hide the deeper causes that cause them.

Some of these reasons are: a) Lack of registration of forests and forests in the country with the drafting and ratification of Forest Maps; and in many cases the complete absence of preventive firefighting policy; (d) ineffective and spasmodic guarding of our forests; as an indifference to our natural wealth and g) lack of appropriate equipment.

Wildfires require planning and organization on three levels:

  • The first and foremost level, in my opinion, is that of prevention and it concerns the Forest Service, the First Degree TABs and the voluntary groups of civil society.
  • The second and most important level is that of repression and mainly concerns the Fire Service and A and B Grades as well as volunteers.
  • The third and equally important level is that of the protection and restoration of burnt areas and concerns the central administration and the Forest Service in particular.

All three levels require a concrete plan (National, Regional, local), human and financial resources and above all coordination at all levels.

Conditions in our country are unforeseen and always demanding after major disasters. As always today, the speculative, populist and grandiose proclamations remind the “natives” that the fairy tale of promises holds well.

Staff training and environmental awareness activities for children at the CAMP camp Ag. Nikolaou Halkidiki

As part of the collaboration that began this year between OMIKRON Environmental Consultants SA and the camp for children CHANTH in Agios Nikolaos Halkidiki. Camp staff were trained in fire risk management using appropriately designed scenarios generated by the software simulator o-fire

In the discussion, the factors that influence the possible start and behavior of a forest fire were clarified in detail, questions were raised about preventive measures and the existing response plan, and finally good practices were identified. Earlier, there was a specially designed training camp with the largest campers focused on the importance of the forest and its protection.

The camp for children CHANTH Agioy Nikolaoy uses, from today, the system o-fire , investing in new technologies to enhance the safety of tourist facilities against fires. The accompanying o-fire services include mapping the area of interest in order to adapt the software to local conditions, continually recording local meteorological data, as well as providing ready-made weather scenarios for the area to train risk management staff. of fires.

With the use of o-fire, YMCA Halkidiki Campus seeks to raise the level of security of its visitors and facilities, along with the high quality services and original activities it offers each year to its small campers.
